Summary
A 16-year-old Nigerian who was wrongfully accused of serial murder has been found not guilty.
In early November 2024, news of a 16-year-old girl who allegedly killed five men went viral on TikTok and took the entire internet by storm. The news had it that Aisha Suleiman prepared the pepper soup intending to avenge her ex-boyfriend Emmanuel Elogie for dumping her, but unfortunately, four of his friends ate it with him. The allegation stirred up different reactions offline and online, with many people calling for her demise.
Aisha was saved by the Edo state police when she was on the brink of jungle justice for an unconfirmed murder allegation.
According to her, an autopsy has been carried out, showing the cause of the men’s death was generator fumes, not poisoning.
“The boy that died, his best friend, once posted me, and my friend screenshotted it, showing me that he had placed a ₦500,000 bounty on me, accusing me of poisoning them,” Aisha recounted.
She was shocked to see such heavy allegations levelled against her trending online, and she decided to report the case to the police officially. But she was ambushed.
“While heading to the police station to report, the same guy and his friends blocked the road, threatening to kill me, claiming I was the one who cooked the pepper soup.”
Her father also recounts getting to the scene, which looked like a market square with an angry mob with four litres of petrol waiting to burn his daughter and the house. Aisha affirms that she made no pepper soup on the day. Also, the father of one of the victims bore her witness, confirming, “She never came to their house that day.”
An activist who drew the attention of the council and played a significant role in proving her innocence also shared his findings, stating: “Because of her age, she wasn’t taken to prison but was instead remanded in welfare.”
Following the police investigation, Aisha was found not guilty, and all charges against her were cleared. She is also back on her family, sharing her story. However, the incident highlights a trend of gender disinformation where women are negatively portrayed, sometimes without a proper fact check, with jungle justice ready to be unleashed on them.
