A 32-year-old man Indian man, identified as Kundlik Uttam Kale, had been recently apprehended by the police for murdering his wife. The incident happened in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district close to Mumbai, India on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.
According to police officials, the couple had recently had a third daughter, which triggered a series of domestic violence. Maina’s sister filed a complaint stating that Kale had frequently taunted his wife for birthing only daughters and often engaged in arguments regarding the matter.
On the night of the incident, following yet another argument, Kale reportedly poured petrol on Maina and set her ablaze. She managed to escape the house, screaming for help, and neighbours attempted to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, Maina sustained severe burns and died while being transported to a hospital. Kundlik Uttam Kale has been taken into custody by the Gangakhed police and is facing charges of murder in connection with the horrific crime.
Annually, men kill thousands of women they know. In 2023, approximately 51,100 women and girls were killed by their intimate partners or other family members. Gender-related killings are also rife in India, with about 20 femicides committed daily.
