The DOHS Cares Foundation has launched a Live Femicide Dashboard towards combating and re-framing Femicide in Nigeria from a private matter to a public issue. The unveiling of the event held at Gbagada Lagos on August 15, 2024, was witnessed by women’s rights advocates, the media, and other relevant stakeholders.

Femicide is the highest manifestation of male violence against women. It is men (lover, husband, sex buyers, solicitor, ex-husband) intentionally killing women and girls primarily because of their sex. Femicide is often characterised by domestic violence and sexual abuse.  It is rooted in a power structure that discriminates against women, motivated by the offenders’ perception of male superiority.

In 2015, The United Nations special rapporteur on violence against women, led by Dr Duvbraka Simonovic, called on member states to establish a national femicide watch/observatory to describe and respond to emerging femicide cases and gather data and produce new knowledge that can be used in the prevention of femicide.

In response to such a call, the DOHS Foundation unveiled Nigeria’s femicide dashboard on its website www.dohscares.org. To access the live data, viewers can click on the website’s Resources Tab, select the femicide dashboard, and register.

In many countries, femicide watches are formed by feminist groups and activists such as DOHS which is already tracking and analysing data and raising awareness about the growing issue of femicide in Nigeria. The founder of DOHS, Ololade Ajayi, told Naija Feminists Media that the live board is a way to drive social change through data.

“Data is not neutral or objective. We are using technology and data to conduct accurate analysis. Unless comparable data is collected on a given crime, there will be no proper understanding or effective strategy to combat it.” Ms Ajayi said, “Our Live Femicide Dashboard aims to challenge power relations and drive social change by using Data on Femicide to ignite calls for action.”
