Summary
On International Day of Girls in ICT, there is urgent need to support and include girls in technology, emphasising that true digital transformation requires breaking down systemic barriers and empowering girls to thrive in ICT careers.
Today, on International Day of Girls in ICT, with the theme “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation,” we highlight the need for real support for girls pursuing careers in technology. This is not only a day for celebration but a call to action.
Despite the growing digital economy, girls are still underrepresented in ICT fields. According to UNESCO, women make up only 28% of the engineering workforce globally. This figure underscores the gap in opportunities for women, especially in technology-focused careers. So, why are women still underrepresented in tech despite their talent and potential? It starts when they are minors.
When women enter the ICT space, they bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. From Ada Lovelace, who pioneered the first algorithm, to Funke Opeke, who revolutionised Nigeria’s broadband infrastructure, the contributions of women in tech have shaped the digital landscape. But how many more women could make similar contributions if they were given the resources and encouragement to do so?
The barriers women face are not based on ability but on systemic challenges. Right from being young, girls are discouraged from pursuing STEM subjects in school, limiting their opportunities. If girls are excluded from tech education and careers, who will build the digital future we all rely on?
The digital economy in Africa is expected to create millions of jobs in the coming years. According to the African Development Bank, digital technologies could generate up to 230 million jobs by 2030. But how many of these jobs will be filled by women if they are not properly included in ICT education and training?
As we reflect on this day, we must ask ourselves: how can we create more opportunities for girls to thrive in ICT? By providing access to education, mentorship, and support, we can ensure that the digital transformation is truly inclusive, with girls playing a key role in shaping the future.
