Gunmen Attack Kebbi’s Government Girls School, Abduct 25 Girls

Summary

Gunmen have attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting 25 schoolgirls. They killed the school’s vice principal, Hassan Makuku, during the raid. A security guard, Ali Shehu, was also injured. 

In the early hours of Nov. 17, 2025, at about 4:00 a.m., gunmen attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting 25 schoolgirls. 

According to the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar Kotarkoshi, the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, engaged the police tactical unit in a gunfight before scaling the school fence and abducting the students from their hostel.

During the attack, a security guard, Ali Shehu, sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand. The assailants also killed the school’s vice principal, Malam Hassan Makuku.

Security agencies have deployed military units, police tactical teams, and local vigilantes to comb the surrounding forests and suspected escape routes. The operation is ongoing as efforts intensify to rescue the abducted schoolgirls.

Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, has intervened, directing security agencies to pursue the attackers and secure the immediate release of the girls. The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, also condemned the raid and called for decisive action by security forces.
