Kenyan police arrested John Kiana Wambua in Huruma, Nairobi, after discovering human body parts in his backpack. He confessed that the remains belonged to his 19-year-old wife.

On January 22, 2025, a 29-year-old Kenyan man named John Kiana Wambua was caught with the mutilated corpse of his wife in his backpack. The police, who found him just before daybreak while patrolling Huruma, a district east of Nairobi, immediately took him into custody.

The police said that they suspected Wambua was carrying something illegal, so they searched his backpack and found the body parts of a human. They then queried him about the owner of the body part, which he acknowledged belonged to his 19-year-old wife.

According to the DCI statement, John Wambua confirmed the body parts belonged to his wife, with his body language expressing being unperturbed. They also discovered a knife, blood-soaked clothes and more body parts under a bed after he led the officers to his home.

The DCI commented that John will be formally charged with murder during an upcoming court hearing.

Femicide is recurring in Africa, with Kenya having the highest rate of femicide in Africa. According to a 2020 report by the World Health Organization, an estimated number of 47 women are killed each week.  In December 2024, hundreds of Kenyan women took to the streets to protest against the number of femicides happening around the country.

Kenya is not the only country with a high femicide rate. In Nigeria alone, Naija Feminist Media have reported numerous cases of women that men have murdered. In the second week of January 2025, Ajayi Timileyin murdered Salome Adaidu and is yet to be charged in court.
