Jessica L. Martinez, a New York–based criminal-justice advocate and founder of “Somebody’s Auntie,” earned a new Guinness World Record for the world’s largest afro on Oct. 23, 2025, in New York.
Guinness World Records officially confirmed her achievement in November after measuring her afro at 29 cm in height, 31 cm in width and an extraordinary 190 cm in circumference.
Known for embracing her natural hair and advocating for natural-hair pride and broader acceptance of textured hair, Jessica said the recognition represents more than a hairstyle, stating it is a celebration of identity and natural-hair pride.
“For me, breaking this record confirms that the things that make us different and unique should always be celebrated. It amplifies what I have always known deep down, that natural hair is not a trend, it’s a lifestyle,” she said.
She also noted that her accomplishment serves as encouragement to younger people with natural hair to embrace their uniqueness with confidence.
The previous record holder, Aevin Dugas, personally passed the title to Jessica during a ceremony in New York, marking a symbolic moment of pride and continuity within the natural-hair community.
Jessica said her afro reflects her personal journey and hopes the milestone challenges stereotypes around textured hair while continuing the push against hair-based discrimination.
