Former Minister of Education, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, has condemned the recent abduction of the 25 girls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State. She expressed this via her X handle on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Recall that 25 girls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, were abducted by gunmen on the early morning of Monday, November 17, 2025. This incident reflects the growing insecurity and the safety of schoolchildren in northern Nigeria.

The former minister stated that the abduction was deeply heart-wrenching, and it adds to the disturbing pattern of school kidnappings that has persisted across the northern states over the past decade. She criticised the federal government, saying it allowed “persistent enabling of impunity” for terrorists. She argued that the state’s failure to enforce consequences continues to embolden criminal groups.

She referenced the government’s delayed responses to previous mass abductions, including the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 and the Dapchi girls in 2018. She stated that lessons from those previous tragedies should guide the current administration. She called on the federal and state governments to rescue the girls immediately and fulfil their duty to provide a safe school environment for the girls to continue their learning.

“Those schoolgirls have no reason to spend one day in the enclave of terrorists. Rescue them immediately to continue with their education in Safe Schools that the State and Federal Governments have a duty to provide,” she penned down.
