Summary

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been called out publicly for reportedly retiring  Owolabi Akinlolu, a police officer accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in Lagos, without facing prosecution.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been called out on X following allegations that Owolabi Akinlolu, a 56-year-old Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), accused of raping a 17-year-old girl at Ogudu Police Station, was retired from service without facing prosecution. The case, which dates back to July 2024, has resurfaced after a viral post by X user @IruefiNG on January 4, 2024.

According to Irufi, the survivor, a high school student, had visited the Ogudu Police Station to report a stolen phone when the alleged incident occurred.

“For those who don’t know the story. This idiot raped a 17-year-old high school student who came to report her stolen phone in Ogudu Police Station where he is an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

“He told her that he had been ‘eyeing’ her for a long time and that now that she was within reach, she wouldn’t escape. On that fateful day, he called her through her mum’s phone and told her that he had caught the people who took her phone, she rushed to the station only for this monster to rape her right inside his office without protection. This happened in July 2024,” he tweeted.

“Irufi further stated that the allegations against Akinlolu mark the second reported case of sexual violence involving the officer. In 2016, he was accused of raping another girl, yet no legal action was taken against him. He never appeared in court for one day. She is his second known victim – Imagine how many the ones that didn’t voice out are,” he said.

Despite the severity of the most recent accusations, Owolabi reportedly retired from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in December 2024 without being dishonourably discharged or facing trial. This retirement status allows him to receive gratuities of millions of naira drawn from public funds.

At the time this story was written, the NPF had yet to release a statement defending or countering Irufi’s claims on X.
