Buku Abi, daughter of convicted singer R. Kelly, has revealed that her father sexually assaulted her when she was about 8 or 9 and has been too scared to tell anyone till now.
Joanne Kelly, popularly known as Buku Abi, one of R. Kelly’s three children with ex-wife Drea Kelly, has revealed that she was sexually abused by her father, who is currently in jail for multiple counts of sexual abuse.
In a new docuseries that premiered on the 11th of October titled “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” being aired on the TVEI Streaming Network, 26-year-old Abi admitted she was too scared to tell anyone that her father sexually abused her when she was 8 or 9.
Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R. Kelly, is a former singer, songwriter, record producer, and currently, a convict at the Federal Correctional Complex, Butner in North Carolina on multiple charges of sexual abuse, child pornography, sexual involvement with minors, among others.
R. Kelly, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2022 after a New York court found him guilty of eight counts of sex trafficking and one count of racketeering, was also married to late singer Aaliyah while he was 27 and she was 15.
She mentioned that it happened while he was having a party, and she did not want to be alone. Instead, she opted to sleep in his office, which was near the party’s venue.
“I just remember falling asleep, and it had to be like 3 or 4 in the morning, and I just remember waking up to him touching me, and I didn’t know what to do. So I just kinda laid there, and I pretended to be asleep,” she said.
The rapper, who was found guilty of child pornography and enticing kids for sex in February 2023 has been given an additional 20 years in prison in Chicago. Kelly is expected to be eligible for parole at the age of 80 and will serve all but one of those years consecutively.
In an Instagram post, Buku stated that she has been finding it hard to develop words, as part of her feels like she should hide or act as if nothing has happened. Furthermore, she mentioned that she did not hate her father and was not speaking out for ulterior motives like revenge or clout.
“I did it for me, I did it for my son. I did it for my peace of mind. I did it for the ones that love and know me but never understood me growing up. I did it to honour truth. I did it to look my biggest demon in the eyes and tell ’em, l’m done.
“l love my mother. I love my father. I honour my mother; honour my father. But I will never sacrifice truth over “honour” (true honour should never require that anyway) my brother, sister, my son and I deserved better than what we’ve experienced and continue to experience,” she shared.
