Within 24 hours of Naija Feminists Media’s team intervention, Mercy Vangervihi has received over N3 million in donations for medical treatment.

Recall on August 28, 2024, 15-year-old Goodluck Bisong broke into his neighbour’s house and raped 14-year-old Mercy while she was asleep. The horrific event, which happened in Ebonyi state, led to the survivor having “Acute Epidural Hematoma,” a life-threatening condition which requires immediate treatment or can cause brain damage or possibly death if left untreated.

The family, however, needed N2,5000,000 to pay for the survivor’s surgery. As such, Egbo Chisom, an NFM’s WhatsApp Community member, informed the group. We investigated the event and reported it here and here. NFM’s team member Ufuoma Gabari also highlighted the incident on her X page. This resulted in Nigerians donating over N3,000,000 needed for Mercy’s surgery and medical care.

On Mercy’s wellbeing, Happiness Vangervihi, Mercy’s elder sister, told NFM that “she is responding to treatment.”

The family, however, still awaits the military to hold Goodluck Bison accountable for his actions and bring justice to the matter. Several Nigerians have expressed what justice would look like following NFM’s report.

Miss Oluchi (@phatbabelu) said, “He should stay in prison for life because he will do it again.” Another reader (@thegirlasabear) commented, “He can’t be allowed to grow for one more day.”
