Summary
Tems has launched The Leading Vibe Initiative, a new programme set to debut in Lagos to empower young women in music through mentorship, training, and industry support.
Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has launched The Leading Vibe Initiative to empower young women in the music industry. The initiative will debut with a two-day seminar in Lagos, Nigeria, on August 8 and 9, 2025, and is expected to expand to other African cities.
The groundbreaking programme, which targets 15 to 20 women, is designed to provide opportunities for participants to hone their craft, sharpen industry knowledge, and build community. It will include meet-and-greets with industry executives, training sessions on songwriting and music production, studio sessions, panel discussions, and tutorials on the business side of music.
Participants will also receive production software and creative resources to support their growth.
Speaking on the launch, Tems said:
“My goal with the Leading Vibe Initiative is to help discover and support talented young women who have the potential to redefine the industry. By providing access, tools and opportunity, we’re creating space for them to find their voices, step into their power and shape the future of music across the continent and globally.”
Tems created the initiative to address the underrepresentation of women in the music industry, particularly in performance, production, songwriting, and business roles. Statistics cited in the release show that women make up only 22 per cent of artistes worldwide, with female songwriters and producers accounting for just 12.8 and 3 per cent, respectively.
As part of the programme, Tems has partnered with Native Instruments, a leading music production technology company, which will provide both technological support and equipment. Tems has also joined the Native Instruments Artist Board, a collective of influential artists that includes Alicia Keys, Noah “40” Shebib, Jacob Collier, and Ludwig Göransson.
