The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Friday Onu, following a viral video that captured him assaulting a commercial driver, Ms. Yetunde Amole, in an attempt to steal her car battery along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The incident, which occurred on April 7, 2025, near the Oriental Hotel, circulated widely on social media, showing Yetunde visibly distressed with a swollen face as she recounted her ordeal.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Onu had boarded Amole’s vehicle posing as a passenger headed to the Nigerian Law School. Suspicious of his movements, Yetunde caught him trying to remove her car battery through the rearview mirror and intervened, prompting the violent assault.
“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on social media, depicting the assault of one Yetunde Amole by a suspected thug near the Oriental Hotel area,” he stated. “The command condemns this act in the strongest terms and wishes to update the public on the actions already taken.”
He confirmed that Friday Onu was promptly arrested by officers from the Maroko Division shortly after the incident. However, while preparations were underway to arraign him, the suspect reportedly fell ill and was transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment under close supervision.
He added that the command remains committed to ensuring justice is served and that Friday will be charged as soon as he is medically cleared.
In a charge sheet filed by SP Ayeni Franca, the Divisional Crime Officer of the Maroko Division, the police have brought a three-count charge against Friday Onu:
- Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace: Friday Onu reportedly dragged Amole from her vehicle and tore her shirt, an act considered a breach of public peace under Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
- Attempted Theft: He is accused of attempting to steal a car battery valued at ₦90,000, punishable under Section 406(1)(2) of the same law.
- Assault Causing Harm: Friday reportedly hit Amole on the face and back with his fists, causing visible bodily harm, an offence under Section 173.
The police also commended Ms Yetunde’s courage in standing up to the assailant.
“We commend Ms. Amole for her bravery and assure her and all victims of crime that their cases will be thoroughly pursued,” Hundeyin said.
The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting residents and urged continued public cooperation with law enforcement.
