Summary

Naija Feminists Media and the Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation trained students from Blooming Lights School, Omole, and Star Diamond School, Ojodu, on digital safety and media literacy as part of its youth engagement during the #16DaysOfActivism campaign. The training covered responsible social media use, privacy, online consent, cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and the ethics of AI.

Naija Feminists Media, in partnership with the Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation (ICCEF), has continued its school outreach on media literacy and online safety with training sessions at Blooming Lights School in Omole and Star Diamond School in Ojodu, as part of the global #16DaysOfActivism campaign. The programme equipped students with knowledge and skills to navigate digital spaces responsibly, given the rising incidents of cyberbullying and online harassment, especially affecting young women and girls.

Students from JSS3 to SS3 participated in workshops that covered responsible social media use, online privacy and consent, cyberbullying, harmful online content, image-based abuse, and ethical use of AI. The training emphasised understanding digital footprints and ways to protect personal information online. Students were also taught how to use social media for learning, advocacy, creativity, talent development, and even income generation, while being encouraged to T.H.I.N.K (True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind) before posting anything online.

The sessions were facilitated by Kosisochukwu Ani, contributing writer at Naija Feminists Media, who introduced the concept of social media as “a digital space that connects people across the globe, but also exposes them to risks if not used responsibly.” She guided students through the uses and risks of popular platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, YouTube, Snapchat, and Telegram, with practical examples relevant to their everyday experiences.

Interactive group activities facilitated by Simbiat Bakare, Founding Director of Naija Feminists Media, allowed students to identify common digital risks faced by young people, role-play responses to cyberbullying and harassment. The students also performed creative presentations and poems to promote safe online behaviour. These activities encouraged teamwork, reflection, and open conversations around the realities of online violence.

Students actively participated, asking thoughtful questions about privacy settings, the dangers of oversharing, AI ethics, reporting online abuse, and dealing with harmful content. Many are committed to becoming digital safety ambassadors in their schools by promoting respectful communication and supporting peers facing online harm.

Ohunene Majebi, ICCEF Communications Officer, motivated students to respond when they witness digital harassment actively. She emphasised that online violence has real-life impacts and stressed early education on rights, digital responsibility, and self-protection.

To conclude each session, Simbiat Bakare led the students in a collective digital responsibility pledge: “Your future self is watching. What you post today creates the digital you that schools, employers, and friends will meet tomorrow. Make sure it is a version you are proud of. When in doubt, don’t post.” The pledge symbolised the students’ commitment to safer, more responsible online behaviour.

Naija Feminists Media and ICCEF will continue visiting schools across Lagos to empower more students with digital safety, creativity, and confidence as part of the #16DaysOfActivism campaign.
