A Delta State High Court has sentenced a 56-year-old man identified as Mr Collins Ika, to 60 years imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old neighbour’s daughter in Ugolo community, Okpe Local Government Area of the state. The sexual violence occurred between 2021 and 2022, while the judgment took place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
According to the girl’s mother, she had entrusted her children to Collins, who was their neighbour, during her absence. The survivor told the court that the rapist repeatedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse. After the survivor’s persistent complaints of waist pain, the abuse was exposed.
Following a report to the police, Collins fled the community but was apprehended in a sting operation facilitated by a human rights activist, Israel Joe. He attempted to bribe his way through, but the money, N111,000, was rejected and presented in court as evidence. The money was later forfeited to the Delta State Government.
During the court proceeding, Justice Egwu stated that the prosecution had proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt and hence sentenced Collins to 60 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. He mentioned that the judgment should serve as a deterrent to others. The court also ordered him to pay ₦50 million compensation to the survivor.
Earlier this week, Naija Feminists Media also reported how a 39-year-old man raped an 8-year-old girl in Calabar. Meanwhile, an ongoing investigation exists for a survivor who was raped in her own home, as reports of male violence against women and girls continue to be a persistent issue in Africa’s largest country.
