The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed condemnation and embarked on a strike for the brutal assault of a medical professional at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State. This was made known in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

According to the association’s statement,  the doctor, who is a house officer, was attacked by seven men, alleged to be students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. She was singled out and brutally attacked after being recognised as one of the team members who attended to a patient who died at the Accident and Emergency unit.

Describing the incident as a growing threat towards health workers, NARD called the violence a systematic failure and reflection of a deeper institutional and security failures within Nigeria’s health sector. It added that hospitals are sanctuaries, and doctors provide selfless services despite delayed remuneration and overwhelming workloads that physically harm them in the course of discharging their duties.

In addition, NARD directed its members to stop all services until their safety is guaranteed
