Veteran Nollywood Actress Oby Kechere Dies at 53

Nigerian actress and film director Oby Kechere, widely recognised for her role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, has died after a prolonged illness. Her death was confirmed by the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Uche Agbo, who announced that she passed away on April 27, 2026.
In an official statement released on May 2 2026, he expressed deep sorrow, describing Oby as a dedicated professional and an invaluable member of the guild. She is survived by her family and loved ones.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairperson of the DGN Abuja Chapter,” the statement read.
Born in Mbaise, Imo State, Oby Kechere began her Nollywood career in 2001, initially appearing in popular “August Meeting” films before gaining widespread recognition in Aki na Ukwa. In the film, she portrayed Gladys alongside the iconic duo Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme, popularly known as Aki and Pawpaw.
A graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, Oby stood out among many of her contemporaries for her formal training, which contributed to her versatility and depth as a performer.
Over a career spanning more than two decades, she built a reputation as a reliable and dynamic actress, taking on roles across comedy, drama and ensemble productions. Her notable works include Gone Forever, August Meeting, Ononikpo Aku, American Husband, Beyond Death, and Secrets of the Heart, among others.
Beyond acting, Oby also worked as a film director and served with the Nigerian National Orientation Agency in Abuja, reflecting her commitment to both the film industry and national development. By the mid-2000s, she had established herself as one of Nollywood’s most sought-after character actresses.
