On July 21, 2026, a Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar convicted John Sunday Eyo of raping a 16-year-old girl and sentenced him to spend the rest of his life in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service at Afokang Prison, Calabar.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Blessing Egwu, who found Eyo guilty following a trial supported by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a Calabar-based non-governmental organisation focused on protecting children and indigent women.
His conviction was secured by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non-governmental organisation in Cross River State. Commenting on the judgment, James Ibor, principal counsel and co-founder of BRCI, stated that Cross River State has zero tolerance for the abuse of children.
BRCI commended the Cross River State Police Command for its diligent investigation and prosecution support, as well as the Attorney-General of Cross River State, Etubom Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
