On July 28, 2026, Nigerian weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih won gold in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, setting new Commonwealth Games records in all three stages of the competition.
Her victory brings Nigeria’s gold medal tally to five at the Glasgow Games, with the country’s weightlifters emerging as one of the strongest contingents at the competition.
Onome opened her campaign by lifting 93kg in the snatch, setting a new Games record. She then raised 113kg in the clean and jerk to establish another Games record before finishing with a record-breaking total of 206kg to seal the gold medal. She finished ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who claimed silver with 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx took bronze with 178kg.
Onome Omolola Didih is a Nigerian weightlifter who qualified for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games through the 2025 Commonwealth Championships. The National Sports Commission has increased the reward package for Nigerian gold medallists at the Glasgow Games, with each gold medallist entitled to a total of $10,000, comprising $5,000 in instant cash and another $5,000 paid directly into their bank account. The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, had reportedly promised Onome an additional $2,000 under the commission’s motivation initiative before her final lift.
