“Mary Habila Had Heart Condition,” Family Says at Burial of Lady Found Dead at David Umahi Residence

The family of Mary Habila, the 25-year-old nurse who died at the Ebonyi State residence of Minister of Works David Umahi on June 27, 2026, has broken its silence on the cause of her death. They revealed in a burial brochure tribute that she lived with a hole in her heart and died following a cardiac arrest. 

The disclosure came after her burial in Nok, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State on August 21, 2026, two months after her death and weeks after a disputed autopsy process that left the actual cause of death independently unverified.

Recall that NFM reported on the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death, which attracted widespread public concern after it emerged that she had been found unresponsive at Minister Umahi’s residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and was brought dead to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital. 

Her death only became public knowledge in July, approximately two weeks after it occurred, which triggered further alarm and calls for transparency. Minister Umahi repeatedly denied involvement in her death.

In a tribute published in her burial brochure, the family shared, “Mary Habila lived with a heart condition, having been diagnosed with a hole in her heart. Though she faced significant health challenges, she carried herself with courage, faith, and quiet resilience.”

The family added that her condition became critical despite medical care, prayers, and support from her relatives and loved ones. “She sadly passed away following a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.”
