The Kogi State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into the fatal shooting of Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi by her male colleague, Corporal Amos Yusuf, who subsequently turned the weapon on himself at the officers’ residential quarters in ASCO Camp, Ajaokuta.

The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, 23 October 2026. According to the official police account, Yusuf, who was on night duty, left his post with his service AK-47 rifle, went to Onimisi’s residence, and opened fire on her. She sustained gunshot wounds to the leg, shoulder and abdomen. Yusuf then shot himself with the same rifle.

Both officers were rushed to separate medical facilities, where medical personnel confirmed them dead. Their remains were later deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges at the scene. The Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta led a team to the location after the incident was reported at approximately 11:04 p.m.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, preliminary findings confirmed that Corporal Amos Yusuf shot Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi before shooting himself. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for in-depth investigation.

“The circumstances and motive remain subjects of investigation, and the Command will not speculate on matters yet to be established,” the statement emphasised. Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi extended condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the two deceased officers and promised verified updates as appropriate.

Earlier reports from sources cited by some media outlets described the two officers as having been in a romantic relationship that had experienced difficulties, including allegations of trust issues and prior conflicts. Police authorities have not confirmed any such details and have explicitly declined to speculate pending the outcome of the SCID probe. Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi was a serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Ajaokuta Divisional Police Headquarters. Her death at the hands of a male colleague within the same force has drawn attention to questions of safety, accountability and the risks faced by women officers, particularly in cases that may involve intimate partner dynamics.
