Simone Ehivet, a seasoned politician and nationalist, has officially entered Ivory Coast’s presidential race ahead of the elections scheduled for October 2025. Her nomination as the Movement of Capable Generations (MGC) candidate was confirmed during the party’s congress held in her hometown of Moossou, in the country’s southeastern region, on Dec.1, 2024.
In her acceptance speech, Simone laid out a vision centred on national reconciliation, pledging to grant amnesty to foster unity and build a “prosperous Côte d’Ivoire.” She also prioritised food sovereignty and industrialisation as key pillars of her campaign, signalling a focus on economic independence and growth.
Simone’s political career began decades ago as a trade unionist in the 1970s. In 1982, she co-founded the Popular Ivorian Front (FPI) to challenge the leadership of then-President Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
The FPI, which splintered after Simone and Laurent’s imprisonment for war crimes, is now led by Pascal Affi N’Guessan, another declared contender in the 2025 presidential race.
