Aderonke Rene Ahmed, popularly known as Rene the Leader and the founder and CEO of Visit a Hospital Initiative, has responded to a question on X about coercion and rape.
Replying to user @dumebihers17104, who had asked for a simple explanation on why coercion is considered rape, Rene explained that true consent cannot exist under pressure, threats, or manipulation.
She wrote: “Hi Dumebi, I get where your confusion is coming from, but let me break it down simply. Coercion is rape because consent has to be free. The moment someone gives you an impossible or unfair choice like ‘your body or your future,’ your freedom is taken away.”
According to her, while it may seem like a person chose to comply, the choice is not real when fear or authority is involved.
“It’s like saying, Give me your wallet or I’ll shoot you. If you hand it over, you didn’t want to, you were forced by fear. That’s exactly what’s happening when a lecturer threatens your grades for sex,” she added.
Rene’s response came after Dumebi wrote: “Please explain to me like a baby, how coercion is rape… If for some reason a lecturer comes to me and says, it’s either you give me your body or I fail you! I have a million choices in this situation but the truth is I will most likely go for the one that will favour me.”
