Nigerian actress and social media influencer Angela Nwosu has revealed that she is battling postpartum Bell’s palsy. This condition has caused partial facial paralysis shortly after the birth of her second child.
The condition, also known as Idiopathic facial paralysis, often appears suddenly and typically results in weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. In Angela’s case, it has altered her sleeping habits and affected her ability to close one eye properly, indicating how the nerve controlling facial muscles has been impacted.
“My sleeping pattern has changed since I started struggling with Bell’s palsy. One of my eyes doesn’t close properly,” Angela said.
According to research, around 15% of all pregnant women will develop a potentially life-threatening complication that calls for skilled care, and some will require a major obstetrical intervention to survive. The National Library of Medicine also reports that Bell’s palsy has been described in association with pregnancy. Pregnant women are affected three times more often than non-pregnant women; the majority of cases occur during the third trimester (71%) and early postpartum period (21%).
Despite the challenges, Angela continues to engage with her audience, using her platform to inform and inspire others who may be dealing with similar postpartum conditions.
