Summary
Chiemka Okoronta, an international student, received a 10-year prison sentence and now faces deportation following his conviction. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old survivor whom he had deliberately targeted.
Chiemka Okoronta, a 29-year-old Nigerian, has been sentenced to ten years in prison with an extended three-year licence period after being found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl.
It was revealed in the Bradford Crown Court on March 25, 2025, that Chiemka tricked the teenage survivor into going to his place of residence, where he locked her in his toilet and raped her multiple times.
A Prosecutor by the name of Graham O’Sullivan revealed in the court that Chiemka and the survivor were the only passengers on a bus from Wakefield that terminated early in Morley.
They were told to take a taxi to Bradford, but when Chiemka noticed that the teenager’s phone battery had died, he offered to share a taxi with her, and she gave him her remaining money.
The 29-year-old rapist sat in the back with the teenager and began making kissing movements at her. The court noted that the teenager believed the taxi was going to Bradford bus station, while Chiemka had booked the taxi to take him and the teenager to his home address.
After they arrived at his location, the teenager asked Chiemka where the bus station was. He tricked her by telling her to come inside his flat, that there were others there who would help her.
“Under the pretence of going to the toilet, Chiemka told the teenager to come upstairs. He then got her into a toilet, locked the door behind her, and raped her,” the prosecutor said.
Once inside, he lured the survivor inside and subjected her to a sustained sexual assault, locking her in a toilet where the attack occurred.
The survivor escaped immediately after the assault and used a passerby’s phone to call 999, which led to Okoronta’s swift arrest and charge.
Her Honour Judge Sophie McKone said Chiemka was a significant risk of causing serious harm to women.
Chiemka, who appeared via video link from HMP Leeds, was convicted of three counts of rape, plus causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, by a jury following a trial.
The court made it clear that Chiemka Okoronta acted with calculated malicious intent. The judge stated that when the situation presented itself, he did not offer genuine help to the lone, vulnerable young survivor; instead, he thought only of a trick.
His sole goal was to deceive the teenager, lure her into his flat, and subject her to a terrifying ordeal of sexual assault, completely betraying her trust in a moment of crisis.
Due to the severity of this crime, the judge ruled that he will face severe, life-long consequences. He has been ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Furthermore, the judge explicitly stated that following his release from custody after serving his prison sentence, Chiemka would be deported from the UK.
The conviction of Chiemka Okoronta has shocked many Nigerian men who knew him personally, as well as the student community in the UK.
An X user, @badmanszn, expressed his disbelief at Chiemka’s calculated actions, noting his quiet demeanour, and confirmed that he was an international student from Nigeria who came to the UK to pursue his master’s degree.
“Someone I spent so much time with, studied with, and even worked alongside. I can’t believe he’s capable of doing something that sinister. He lured a minor to his house, locked her in the toilet, and raped her three times,” the X user said,
The sentencing of Chiemka Okoronta is not the first instance of a man of Nigerian nationality being arrested, charged, or convicted for sexual offences against minors in the UK. Naija Feminists Media has reported such cases here and here.
