Summary
DOHS Cares Foundation has launched a Femicide Research Hub to prevent femicide in Nigeria through research, advocacy, and policy action.
DOHS Cares Foundation, an organisation fighting to end sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria, has instituted a Research Hub targeted at femicide prevention. The virtual research collaboration, which kicks off officially on January 27, 2025, consists of diverse feminist professionals working together to end Femicide in Nigeria.
Intersecting research with advocacy, media and tech, the team aims to measure the economic and mental impact of Femicide on victims and Nigeria as a country. The team activities include researching how to offer support on trauma healing for families affected by femicide, conducting comparative research and analysis on trends and patterns of Femicide in Nigeria, and measuring state/legal response to past and current Femicide cases. Other research modules include curating prevention-focused interventions, raising funds to combat femicide, and disseminating research findings through the media.
Over the years, Femicide has been a recurring trend in the country. Over 136 cases have been documented in the country within the past year, while Naija Feminists Media has reported some of the incidents here and here. As such, the over 123 volunteers in the Femicide Research Hub will work to fill the gap of information as it relates to male killings of women in the country.
Ultimately, the foundation working with feminist professionals seeks to address the epidemic of Femicide in Nigeria and drive effective legislation to mitigate male violence and support the families of victims.
