The Federal Government has approved the introduction of the Chinese language, Mandarin, into the Senior Secondary curriculum across the country. This new development will begin in the 2025/2026 academic session.
The Federal Capital Territory’s Secretary of Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, announced this on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025. He said this during the inauguration of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun, Wada, Abuja.
“May I inform you that in a recent review of our curriculum, the Chinese language has been selected as one of the international languages to offer in senior secondary schools. That’s to say that FCT has been very visionary in introducing the subject in our schools through the Chinese Corners early enough,” he said.
With this change, Chinese will be offered as an optional foreign subject alongside Arabic and French languages taught in Nigerian schools. Dr Danlami noted that the purpose of the Chinese language is to help students develop skills and cultural knowledge that would improve their global competitiveness.
Additionally, the Federal government has promised to release clear guidelines, necessary instructional tools, and prepare teachers adequately before the official commencement of the Mandarin language.
