Summary
As a woman, feminist and/or ally, you should participate in the #16DaysofActivism Campaign to influence positive change and show solidarity with survivors.
The “16 Days of Activism” is a globally recognised campaign that runs each year from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). Originating in 1991 by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute, this campaign has since become a pivotal period to galvanise action and advocacy against gender-based violence worldwide.
The period is dedicated to amplifying voices, challenging harmful societal norms, and pushing for a future where women and girls can live free from fear and violence. Here are five reasons why you should join and participate in this campaign:
1. Be Part of a Global Movement: Joining the “16 Days of Activism” connects you with a worldwide network of advocates working towards the same goal. This solidarity enhances the power of individual actions and amplifies the campaign’s impact. Whether attending events, engaging online, or volunteering, being part of a global movement can be inspiring and empowering.
2. Make a Difference in Your Community: Local activism is as important as global advocacy. By participating, you can help raise awareness within your community, providing education on recognising the signs of abuse, available resources, and ways to support victims. Your involvement can encourage others to understand the issue more deeply and inspire collective efforts to create a safer, more inclusive environment.
3. Influence Positive Change: When you take action, even in small ways, you contribute to broader societal change. Signing petitions, contacting lawmakers, supporting survivor organisations, and sharing information online can all help push for improved laws, funding, and services that support the end of gender-based violence. Every voice counts in urging policymakers to recognise the importance of addressing this issue. A good example is the DOHS 5km race that is aimed at refusing femicide and pushing for legislative change on femicide.
4. Learn and Educate Others: Participating in the “16 Days of Activism” is an opportunity to expand your understanding of gender-based violence and its impact. It equips you with knowledge and tools to educate others and inspire conversations that challenge harmful societal norms. By learning, you become an advocate for a more equitable and just society.
5. Show Solidarity with Victims: By joining the campaign, you tell victims that they are not alone and that their experiences are heard and respected. Showing solidarity is crucial for building a society that supports and values victims, reducing their stigma, and fostering a culture of empathy and understanding.
It’s time to join in amplifying women’s voices, challenging harmful societal norms, and pushing for a future where women and girls can live free from fear and violence.
