Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim met with Hon. Fatima Talba to discuss the Gender Bill and the need for increased women’s representation in Nigeria’s legislature. With only 19 women currently serving across both chambers, the Minister pledged the full support of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to push for the bill’s passage, reaffirming a joint commitment to advancing gender equality under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has reaffirmed the Federal Ministry’s commitment to advancing women’s political representation during a meeting with Hon. Fatima Talba, Member of the House of Representatives for Nangere/Potiskum Constituency, Yobe State.
The meeting, held on Monday, focused on the urgent need to increase the number of women in Nigeria’s legislature, where only 19 women currently serve across both chambers—a stark reflection of the country’s gender imbalance in political leadership.
Hon. Fatima briefed the Minister on the Gender Bill, a critical piece of legislation aimed at securing special seats for women at both the federal and state levels. The bill seeks to break systemic barriers that have historically hindered women’s participation in governance and policymaking.
“I assured Hon. Talba of the full support of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in advocating for the passage of this transformative bill,” said Minister Imaan. “Together, we are committed to breaking barriers, empowering women, strengthening families, and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda for a more inclusive Nigeria.”
The Minister emphasised that achieving gender parity in political representation is central to national development and democratic progress. She also praised Hon. Talba’s dedication to championing gender-responsive legislation in the National Assembly.
The meeting marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to institutionalise inclusive governance and ensure that women’s voices are adequately represented at all levels of leadership in Nigeria.
