Mo Abudu, Nigerian filmmaker and CEO of EbonyLife Group, has been named among Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People of 2025,’ cementing her status as a global leader in media and storytelling. The prestigious annual list, unveiled on Wednesday, recognises individuals whose work has had an extraordinary impact across industries and cultures worldwide.
Mo features in the “Leaders” category of the list, which is divided into six sections: Artists, Icons, Innovators, Titans, Pioneers, and Leaders. British actor Idris Elba penned the tribute honouring Mo, praising her drive, influence, and unwavering commitment to elevating Africa’s global narrative.
“That’s the thing about Mo: she wastes no time,” Idris wrote. “She has an infectious, can-do attitude and the tenacity to overcome any obstacle in her way. Her sprawling empire—from studios and productions to cinemas and a creative academy—is a testament to that.”
In his tribute, Idris also highlighted the $50 million Afro Film Fund launched by Mo in 2024, describing her as a visionary who cares deeply about how Africa and its people are portrayed on screen. “Anyone who wants to understand the filmmaking landscape in Africa—or anywhere else—could learn a lot from Mo, because she gets things done,” he added.
Mo expressed awe at being included in the iconic list in response to the recognition.
“What an honour indeed! Fun fact: I actually spoke to Idris just last week — and he did not mention a word about this! Life is truly full of beautiful surprises.” She said. “Thank you, @TIME, for this recognition, and thank you, Idris, for your thoughtful, generous words. I’m deeply grateful. Let’s keep telling our stories and getting things done!”
Mo’s inclusion has drawn praise from across Nigeria and beyond. The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, extended her congratulations to Mo and other distinguished African women recognised on this year’s list.
“Mo Abudu’s achievements serve as an inspiration to women and girls across the continent,” Imaan said. “Her inclusion celebrates a dynamic career dedicated to reshaping the global perception of Africa through storytelling, enterprise, and advocacy.”
She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to empowering women through policies aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising the importance of promoting equal opportunities and leadership development for women across Nigeria and the continent.
Under Mo’s leadership, EbonyLife TV has emerged as a premier platform for African narratives and creative excellence. Its productions reach international audiences and partner with global media giants.
