The Nigerian gospel music industry has been struck by tragedy with the death of popular singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known for her hit song Omije Ojumi.

Her passing was confirmed on January 13, 2026, in a statement shared on Instagram by fellow gospel artist Ayo Melody on behalf of the family. Accompanied by a photograph of the late singer and a short video clip, the post revealed that Bunmi died on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital.

The statement, signed by Olawale Akinnaanu on behalf of the family, read in part:

“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye (Omije Ojumi), who passed away on 12th January, 202,6 at Lagos hospital, Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”

Bunmi Akinnaanu, fondly known as Omije Ojumi, rose to prominence with her widely loved track of the same name, which became a staple in churches and Christian homes across Nigeria. She later released other notable songs, including O Ti Sure. Bunmi began singing at a young age and eventually left a banking career to pursue gospel music full-time.

Her death comes months after she publicly sought prayers for a serious leg ailment. In October 2025, a video circulated online showing her at a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, with her leg stretched on a chair as a pastor prayed for her. The cleric described her condition as a spiritual attack, though there is no confirmation that the ailment was connected to her death.

The news has left fans and fellow artistes mourning the loss of one of Nigeria’s cherished gospel voices.
