Femicide has been recurring in Nigeria, with reports showing over 130 incidents reported in the past year. Such reports about men killing their partners have been documented by NFM here, here, and here

Weaponising the trend of victim blaming women for their murder by their male counterparts, on January 31, 2025, a Facebook user, Olajide Segun, claimed that a lady had been used for ritual by her boyfriend.

He posted the picture of the lady with the inscription “RIP, Gone so soon.” He further added a caption, “Rest in peace. She was used for rituals by her Yahoo boyfriend. Be careful, ladies.”

The post almost immediately sprang misogynistic comments such as, “Dey should continue with Yahoo boy dating,” as commented by Valentino Jackson.

NFM Checks

The lady in question is a member of the NFM community, a safe space provided for women to share issues they encounter in society. Priscilla Ayodele told NFM that Olajide posted her picture with the “RIP” edit after she challenged him on a sexist post that he made.

Olamide had made a Facebook post claiming that women are less likely to have a spouse the older they get, stating that the reverse is true for men. NFM contacted Olajide, who confirmed that he claimed Priscillia’s demise in retaliation for her challenging his post.

Olamide edited one of the pictures posted on Priscilla’s page with the RIP remarks and posted it on a Facebook group called Lekki Ajah Connect. Traumatised by the event, Priscilla has since deleted many of the posts on her page.

Efforts to have Facebook remove the post for bullying and harassment through reporting were futile as the organisation claimed that the post “does not go against their Community Standards.”

However, an independent fact-checking organisation that aids Facebook in verifying the accuracy of claims has documented the incident.

Conclusion

The claim that a lady is dead due to ritual killing was false. It was a narrative weaponised by a Facebook user in an attempt to punish a feminist for challenging his sexist remark.
