In a viral video shared on TikTok, a Nigerian mother decried the mass failure of students in the recently released results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Between April and June, 2025, a total of 1,969,313 students across the country sat for the West African Examination. However, the result which was released on Monday, August 4, 2025, sparked a lot of reactions from parents, educators, schools, lawmakers, and students.
Notably, although over 1.6 million students registered for the exam, only 38% of them passed with credit in five core subjects, including English and Mathematics. This record is one of the lowest results since the council’s operation.
Reacting to this development, the Nigerian mother blamed the council, recounting that the students were made to write the English Language paper late into the night under erratic electricity supply and limited time.
“An exam that was written late at night, how do you expect those children to pass? Something must be done about it,” she said.
She called on mothers across the country to demand accountability from the council and ratification of the results. She added that the failure can make the students commit suicide and lose hope in themselves.
