In the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial elections, three women are contesting in the election for the post of deputy governor.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the state governorship elections in Ondo State will take hold on Nov. 16, 2024.
In a document released by INEC on Thursday, the body revealed that party primary elections ended on May 20, and all forms of campaigning will end on Nov 15, a day before the election. An additional 923 polling units were created across the state in 2021, for a total of 3,933. The election will be held across the 18 local government areas in the state.
According to a report from INEC, no women are currently contesting for the governorship post, while three women are contesting for deputy governor posts in the state under different parties. Their names, posts and parties are included in the list below:
- Moyosola Elizabeth Olorunmonu (post of deputy Governor with ADP)
- Ajaunoko Funmilayo Jenyo (post of Governor, with NRM)
- Shekoni Susan Gbemisola (post of deputy Governor, with SDP)
There are 36 contestants overall in Ondo state for the Governor and Deputy Governor posts, respectively, showing that only 8.3% of the contestants are women. According to research, just about 10 per cent of women in Nigeria are represented in political positions. As such, Nigerian women continue to agitate for increased quotas to increase political representation.
