Summary
In the upcoming Ondo State 2024 gubernatorial elections, nine women are contesting in the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the state governorship elections in Ondo State will take hold on Nov. 16, 2024.
In a document released by INEC on Thursday, the body revealed that party primary elections ended on May 20, and all forms of campaigning will end on Nov 15, a day before the election. An additional 923 polling units were created across the state in 2021, for a total of 3,933. The election will be held across the 18 local government areas in the state.
According to the INEC, nine women are contesting for the state’s governor and deputy governor positions under different parties. Their names, posts and parties are included in the list below:
- Ikusika Grace Olanike (post of deputy Governor with ACPN)
- Margareta Modupe Ogunyoku Ojo (post of Governor, with ADC)
- Oluyi Folashade Hellen (post of Governor, with APA)
- Olaiya Remilekun Margareth (post of deputy Governor, with DPC)
- Falana Olamide Juliana (post of Governor, with DPP)
- Fausat Adeola Aliu (post of deputy Governor, with KOWA)
- Oladele Tolani Bamitale (post of deputy Governor, with PPA)
- Orunmoluyi Temidola Olagbegi (post of Governor, with PPN)
- Modupe Akindele Martins (post of Governor, with SDP)
There are 56 contestants overall in Ondo state for the Governor and Deputy Governor posts. Consequently, only 16% of the contestants are women. According to research, just about 10 per cent of women in Nigeria are represented in political positions. As such, Nigerian women continue to agitate for an increase in quota to increase political representation.
