Summary

Jumoke Oduwole has been appointed to take over as Nigeria’s new Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr Jumoke Oduwole as Nigeria’s new Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment.

In a significant cabinet change announced on October 23, 2024, by the Presidency after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the seasoned academic and public sector reformer Dr Jumoke is expected to bring new momentum to Nigeria’s trade and investment landscape. Although her appointment is pending Senate confirmation, she will replace Dr Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, who has been reassigned as the Minister of State for Finance.

Dr Jumoke’s public service record includes her most recent role as Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business. In her position in the Office of the Vice President, she led initiatives under the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) to improve Nigeria’s business climate and enhance investment attractiveness. Her work has been instrumental in simplifying regulatory processes, drawing investment interest, and positioning Nigeria as a more competitive business environment within Africa.

Also an accomplished academic, Dr Jumoke holds an LL.B. from the University of Lagos and an LL.M. in Commercial Law from Cambridge University. She furthered her studies with a master’s degree in International Legal Studies from Stanford University, where she also held a fellowship with the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation. Her scholarship continued as a visiting academic at the University of Houston Law Center, Texas, followed by a doctorate from Stanford Law School, where she specialised in World Trade Organization (WTO) Negotiation Strategy.

Her extensive contributions to the academic and business communities include her role as co-president of the Stanford Alumni Club of Nigeria and service on the executive committee of Nigeria’s Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge) Club. In 2020, she was selected as one of 15 African women leaders to join the inaugural cohort of The Amujae Initiative, the flagship leadership program by the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development.

Alongside Dr Jumoke, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has also been appointed Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, while Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim has replaced Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye as Minister of Women Affairs.
