Following the guild elections that were held within the Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Rose Nabwire has been announced as the institution’s 28th guild president, making her the first woman to hold the position in ten years and the second female president ever in the institution.
Rose, a former vice guild president, secured victory in a tightly contested election on Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2025, receiving 2,255 votes to defeat six other candidates. Her closest challenger, Henry Lukwago, finished with 1,242 votes, while National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Taban Ambaho garnered 827 votes.
MUBS officially announced her win on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Rose Nabwire is the newly elected MUBS guild president. She has obtained the highest number of votes in a tightly contested guild presidential race. Congratulations, Rose!”
A former student of Nabisunsa Girls’ Secondary School, Rose’s election marks a significant milestone in student leadership at the Nakawa-based institution. She will take over from outgoing president Moses Amanya.
Rose becomes only the second woman in 12 years to lead the MUBS student body, highlighting a broader push for increased female representation in leadership roles across Ugandan universities.
Her victory signals a shift in student politics at MUBS, where male candidates have historically dominated guild elections. As she assumes office, expectations are high for her leadership in addressing student concerns and fostering inclusive governance.
