Summary

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representative of the Kogi Central  at the National Assembly, is set to resume on September 23, 2025. This development comes following the expiration of her six months suspension.

After six months of illegal suspension from the National Assembly, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is set to resume on September 23, 2025, when the green house reconvenes. This was confirmed by her lawyer, Victor Giwa.

This development was disclosed during Giwa’s interview with the PUNCH newspaper in Abuja. According to him, Senator Natasha’s suspension has expired, and she is ready to resume her duties alongside her colleagues.

Recalled that Senator Natasha was suspended on March 6, 2025, following her allegation of sexual harassment against the Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This suspension stripped her of salary, security, aides, and official privileges. She insisted that her suspension is unjust and linked to the concern she raised about Akpabio’s sexual harassment.

She challenged her suspension in court, which favoured her. Despite this, the security operatives at the Senate blocked her entry when she attempted to resume her duties in July. Additionally, the Senate insisted that she complete her six-month suspension before resuming.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is among the many women who faced gendered and unfair treatment in Nigerian politics. Earlier this year, Honourable Mojisola Meranda was also forced to resign 49 days after her appointment as the first female speaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly. These incidents showed Nigeria’s patriarchal political system, where the few women who are legitimately elected faced victimisation, were silenced,  and denied real access to political power.

However, following her fight against her unlawful suspension, Senator Natasha’s lawyer affirmed that everything is in place for her resumption.

“We have been told that even the leadership of the Senate is ready to welcome her. So that’s the situation at the moment. There’s no obstacle at all,” he said.
