Nigerians cite numerous negative experiences with the Nigerian Police, supporting Kemi Badenoch’s claims in an interview.
Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) have come out to share their negative experiences with the Nigerian Police following an interview in which Kemi Badenoch spoke on similar experiences going viral.
In an interview with “Honestly with Bari Weiss,” on Dec. 12, 2024, the Leader of the British Conservative Party Kemi Badenoch who grew up in Nigeria stated that she trusted the police in the United Kingdom than the police in Nigeria.
“My experience with the police in Nigeria was very negative, but in the UK, my experience was very positive. The police in Nigeria would rob us. The police stole my brother’s shoes and his watch,” she said in a short clip extracted from the interview that is currently making rounds in the Nigerian Twitter community.
However, while some people including Vice President Kashim Shettima have taken it as an attack on the country, numerous Nigerians support Kemi’s statement from the interview, citing different examples of negative experiences they have had with the Nigerian police.
According to human rights activist Rinu Oduala, “Anything they said the Nigerian police did, they did it and more,” to which X user Titan replied, “Maybe openly criticising them like this would help them change.”
“She has outdated information. Those ones don’t steal again. They rob, kidnap, and assassinate.” – X user Onodugo.
“Richard Gora bought a second hand phone. The police in Kaduna state tracked the phone to Richard’s family house. They “picked” Richard from his house, tortured him to death. They killed Richard for something he knew nothing about. No Justice till this day,” X user Boy called Mun also quote tweeted while attaching a flier of the dead victim Richard Gora.
With video proof attached, X user mideoam also chipped in “The police got in my car, drank my alcohol (while telling me how they like to enjoy themselves too) and still extorted us for a subsequent amount. Say what you want about her but she’s 100% right.”
