Summary

The African Action Congress party (ACC) has condemned Nigerian sexist commentary about Anambra’s gubernatorial candidate, Ms Chioma Ifemeludike. The party urged citizens to redirect their focus towards the ideological mandates she promises to the state's citizens, rather than her appearance.

In defence of its Anambra governorship candidate, Ms Chioma Ifemeludike, the African Action Congress (ACC) has condemned the sexist comments directed towards her body. The statement, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, and issued on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. ACC described the attacks as unacceptable, a distraction from substantive political issues.

Recall that Ms. Chioma is among the sixteen candidates who are set to contest for the governor’s office in the Anambra gubernatorial election. The election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

After Ms Chioma shared her campaign photos and videos that promote inclusive government, sexist comments surfaced, reducing her candidacy to appearance. Some of the comments include @user diaspora_prince tweeting,

“All men will vote for you. The problem is that most women won’t vote for you because of your beautiful shape. You have every physical attribute to attract men’s vote.”

@Mvrqus commented, also commented, “Miss Chioma, none of these people are telling you the truth, but I will…. Do you really think you can secure our vote with your ‘BumBum’?Do you think we are stupïd like some Nigerian men that do anything for Nyash? Sorry, we are not. Please restrategize, don’t be a mumu.”

The party called these attacks backwards ideas, unjust, and a biased message that wants to tie women’s worth to physical appearance, not ability.

“The National Working Committee of our great party has observed in the last 24 hours how our candidate in the forthcoming Anambra governorship elections, Comrade Chioma Ifemeludike, a vibrant and ideologically clear woman, is being judged by her outfit choice and physical features, rather than the quality of her ideas,” the statement reads in part.

The party explained that the attacks mirror the National Assembly, which has “become a house of sexist jokes,” and women in politics face double scrutiny to prove their competence.

“Voters must reject the sexist jokes, the mockery, and the coded language that aim to shrink women out of political spaces. The future we want is one where leaders are judged by their policies, not their looks; their work ethic, and not their wardrobe. Supporting women in politics isn’t charity. It’s democracy in its truest form,” the statement concluded.
