Ogun State Governorship Aspirant Modele Sarafa-Yusuf has declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). She made this declaration on February 26, 2026.
Nigeria is set to conduct its general election in 2027. The Presidential and National Assembly polls are set for January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are to follow on February 6, 2027.
“After deep reflection and wide consultation, I have decided to make myself available to serve as our party’s candidate for Governor, Ogun State, in the 2027 elections,” Modele stated in a public notice addressed to APC leaders, members, and stakeholders in Ogun State about her desire to run as governor.
Modele Sarafa, a pioneer woman sportscaster and marketing communications professional, described her declaration as deliberate in its format. “I chose this system of declaration deliberately to be public, honest, and focused on responsibility rather than spectacle,” she stated.
On the historic dimension of her candidacy, the Ogun state aspirant acknowledged the weight of potentially becoming Nigeria’s first elected female governor, stating that her aspiration goes beyond personal ambition and is about paving the way for future generations of women leaders in Ogun State and Nigeria at large. She was, however, quick to add that her candidacy is not about symbolism but about capacity and competence.
Modele Sarafa previously ran for the Ogun governorship in 2022. She stated that the experience sharpened rather than discouraged her.
“I did not destabilise the system. I accepted the outcome, preserved relationships, and stayed engaged,” she said.
Iyabo Obasanjo has also declared a similar interest in contrast for governorship of the state on the same platform.
