The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Honourable Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has lauded the Senate leadership for the new legislation bill that prescribes life imprisonment for individuals guilty of sexual offences against minors. She pledged the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the strict implementation of this law.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Senate passed a bill that prescribed life imprisonment for Nigerians found guilty of sexual offences against minors. This decision is a significant step towards protecting Nigerian children from sexual offences, abuse, and exploitation.

Honourable Imaan described the bill as a decisive action that sends a clear message that Nigeria will no longer tolerate the abuse, exploitation, or violation of children. She explained that the bill demonstrates the Senate’s unwavering commitment to protect the nation’s most vulnerable citizens, Nigerian children.

She noted that the legislation aligns with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection mechanisms through policies and frameworks, and to harmonise the enforcement of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) across all states. Honourable Imaan reaffirmed that the Ministry is ready to work closely with law enforcement, state ministries, and civil society organisations to ensure the strict implementation of this law and the swift prosecution of offenders.

“This is a declaration of national conscience. Together, we are rewriting Nigeria’s story into one of protection, justice, and hope for every child,” the Minister said.
