Summary: Media personality Toke Makinwa has expressed her decision to stop paying tithe to churches. She cited that the churches are already financially stable, while needy people actually need the tithe.

Popular media personality and broadcaster Toke Makinwa has revealed that she no longer pays monthly tithes to churches, instead redirecting the funds to help the needy. She made this known in her recent interview with Chude Jideonwo on her YouTube channel, Toke Moments, on Saturday, February 15, 2026.

Tithe is a religious contribution of 10% of one’s income or agricultural produce to support a religious institution, its clergy, and its charitable works. It is often viewed as an act of obedience and trust, acknowledging that all wealth ultimately belongs to God and that the giver is merely a steward of those resources.

Speaking with WithChude on the podcast, Toke explained that churches are financially stable, they pay no tax, and are businesses in the real sense. She also questioned the rationale behind giving money to churches when people are struggling to survive.

“I kind of stopped paying tithe to the church because all the churches I know are rich. And I decided that no, no, no, no, I ain’t doing this anymore. I would rather go to hospitals, widows’ homes,” she said.

“All the churches I know are rich. Every Sunday, there’s a building fund envelope. You guys have so much money, and it’s not taxed. It’s a business, if I’m going to be real, because if that pastor dies today, either his wife or his child becomes the next pastor,” she said, adding that leadership succession in many churches is within the family.

Furthermore, the broadcaster recalled that she once gave her entire brand endorsement fee to the church as a tithe.

“I would rather go to hospitals, take a maternity ward, and pay all the bills there,” she said. “I would rather when strangers come to meet me, I would tithe my tithe to them because they are telling me their actual needs.”
