Alabi Anthony, a 21-year-old carpenter, has been arrested and remanded in custody for the alleged rape and murder of 58-year-old Veronica Olaseni. The incident occurred on March 2, 2026, on the victim’s farmland in Iboropa community, Akoko North-East Local Government Area, Ondo State. 

According to sources, Alabi reportedly went to the farm to steal cashew nuts, but was recognised by Veronica, subsequently leading to her being attacked by him. After he strangled her to death, he raped her, stating, “he didn’t want her body to waste.” Her lifeless body was discovered along a bush path under suspicious circumstances.

According to the state’s police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, Alabi was apprehended after Veronica’s stolen phone was traced. He also allegedly stole her cutlass and Access ATM card. Following his arrest, he was arraigned in a Magistrate’s court in Akure on Monday, March 30, 2026. He was charged with a two-count charge of murder and theft. 

The presiding Magistrate, Temilope Adurota, stated that the court lacks jurisdiction over the matter and subsequently ordered his remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned to June 6, 2026, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
