Summary: Senator Oluremi Tinubu launched the ECoN initiative in Kano to turn research and innovation into industry, drive economic growth, and promote job creation across Nigeria.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, launched the Energise Commercialisation Now (ECoN) initiative on April 23, 2026, in Kano. The initiative marks a major step in the Federal Government’s effort to transform research and innovation into economic growth.
It is designed to mobilise innovation, attract investment and accelerate industrial production across all six geopolitical zones of the country. Held under the theme “From Innovation to Industry: Energising Commercialisation,” the programme aims to bridge the gap between ideas generated in research institutions and their practical application in industry.
Speaking at the launch in Kano, Senator Oluremi described Nigeria as a country rich in creativity and innovation, noting that many ideas developed in universities and innovation hubs often fail to reach the marketplace due to systemic challenges.
She said the ECoN initiative is intended to address these gaps by creating an enabling environment that supports talent, nurtures innovation, and facilitates the transition of ideas into viable enterprises.
“The initiative will promote job creation, boost productivity, and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term goal of achieving a one trillion-dollar economy,” she said.
Senator Oluremi also emphasised inclusivity in the innovation ecosystem, calling for greater participation of women and young people. She noted that broad-based participation would strengthen families, enhance national security, and drive sustainable development.
Declaring the programme open, she added that the initiative would begin in the North-West and later expand across all geopolitical zones of the country.
