Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, the lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory, has secured the African Democratic Congress ticket for the FCT senatorial race ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She polled 17,535 votes against her sole challenger’s 806 votes at the party’s primary held on Saturday, May 24, 2026.

“Having scored the highest number of votes of 17,535, and by the powers conferred on me as the returning officer for the Senate and House of Representatives Primary Elections, Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe is hereby declared the winner of the election,” the chairperson and returning officer, Abubakar Adamu, announced at the ADC secretariat.

Senator Ireti Kingibe, a 71-year-old civil engineer and politician, has been the senator representing the FCT since June 2023, when she won the seat under the Labour Party. She has since moved to the ADC.

The race for the FCT senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections is shaping up around two major contenders: Senator Ireti Kingibe and activist Aisha Yesufu, who is seeking the ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The 2027 general elections are expected to be held in February 2027.
