Blessing Moshood, a 29-year-old Sociology graduate of Kogi State University, was murdered and her body dumped in a canal in Jikwoyi, Abuja, on the night of Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Blessing left her family’s home around 8 p.m. on Thursday after speaking with someone on the phone. About an hour later, she called again to say she would briefly return to pick up her phone charger, which she had forgotten. The family never heard from her again.
Concern grew the following day when Blessing failed to return and could not be reached. The family later heard residents discussing the discovery of a woman’s body in a canal. Her sister, Abigail Moshood, recognised the description of the deceased’s hairstyle as matching Blessing’s.
“My mother started crying, and we also learnt that policemen from the Jikwoyi Police Station had evacuated the corpse, which was found half-naked with only a top on, to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State,” Abigail stated.
Abigail visited the Jikwoyi Police Station, where photographs shown to her by officers confirmed that the body was her sister’s. A neighbour, Margaret, described Blessing as intelligent and community-minded, stating that she had graduated with a Second Class Upper in Sociology.
“Whenever she spoke, you could hardly fault her English. She was also very friendly in this neighbourhood and will be greatly missed by all of us, especially the children who have been crying since the news broke,” she stated.
The FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation into the circumstances of Blessing’s death is ongoing. No suspect has been named or arrested as of the time of writing.
Blessing’s murder is the latest in a surge of femicides recorded across Nigeria in May 2026 alone. On May 21, the same night Blessing was killed in Abuja, Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi were identified as suspects who raped and murdered Wendy Achumba, a 21-year-old nursing student, in her off-campus residence in Imo State.
