Nigerian actress Yvonne Jegede took to Instagram on Friday, May 23, 2026, to condemn the silence of Nigerians in the face of an escalating security crisis.

She stated that anyone who fails to speak out is complicit with the oppressors.

“What is happening should scare us even more than the government arresting us for speaking out. I would rather be in prison than have bandits cut off my head,” Yvonne stated. “The silence from Nigerians is a sign of hopelessness, and I am not hopeless.”

Recently, there has been a rise in violence against Nigerians, including femicide. On May 19, 2026, Ms Alamu, the principal of Community High School, Esinele, in the Ahoro-Esinele community of Oriire Local Government Area, cried out for help after armed men invaded the school on May 15, 2026, and abducted her alongside several teachers and students.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. A teacher was killed during the invasion. Another victim, Temitope, a staff member of First Baptist Church in Ogbomosho who appeared in a video carrying a baby, also called on the federal government, the Oyo State Government, and the church to intervene.

Also on May 21, 2026, Onyema Okonkwo, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, 25, raped and murdered Wendy Achumba, a 21-year-old nursing student undergoing Post-Basic Nursing training at Mercy College of Nursing Science in Imo State, in her off-campus residence. Onyema Okonkwo confessed to the crime. Both men were arrested by the Imo State Police Command on May 24, 2026.

Days earlier, on May 21, 2026, Senator Ireti Kingibe narrated how political thugs physically assaulted her and a female House of Representatives aspirant, Dr Fatima, during a disruption at the African Democratic Congress secretariat in Abuja.

Women operating in communities with little security presence remain the most exposed to conflict in Nigeria.
