Prominent Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused Euracare Multi-specialist Hospital of obstructing an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi. She disclosed this in an emotionally public letter posted on her Instagram handle on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Earlier in the year, Naija Feminists Media reported the loss of the author’s twin son, Nkanu, due to medical negligence at Euracare Hospital in Lagos State. During a holiday trip to Lagos, the toddler developed a mild but worsening illness and was admitted to Atlantis Hospital, which referred the family to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for pre-flight diagnostic tests, including an MRI and a lumbar puncture. However, the child died after suffering from seizures and cardiac arrest complications.
In her published letter, the writer openly expressed her grief, saying that her family has been cruelly robbed of the blessing of watching Nkanu grow up. She noted that her ten-year-old daughter has completely shut down, while Nkanu’s twin brother is confused, frequently asking for his twin and pointing out their matching pyjamas.
“To have Nkanu gone so cruelly, so unfairly, so carelessly, has brought an inexpressible pain. In truth, this loss is too much for us, too inconceivable. As each day passes, the darkness blackens even more. We have endured losses in the past, but this is singular in its ability to permanently change the shape of the world,” she wrote.
In addition, the writer alleged that the hospital has threatened her family in regard to their son’s death, stressing that no amount of delay or intimidation would deter her family from seeking justice.
She also stated that Euracare Hospital had falsely stated that the cause of her son’s death was bacterial meningitis, which she said was inaccurate because she believes the primary cause of his death was improper sedation, hypoxic brain injury, and cardiac arrest. She condemned the language “dispute” used to describe her son’s death by Euracare’s lawyers and accused the hospital of providing incomplete medical records, which she described as “strikingly unprofessional,” adding that “one was inaccurate.”
“Most egregiously, Euracare is now asking a High Court to stop this inquest,” she expressed, “If Euracare cares about the truth, then why create delays and distractions and now finally try to stop an Inquest,” she questioned.
