The NAWOJ Lagos “Iconic Woman of the Month” initiative is a monthly spotlight designed to celebrate exceptional Nigerian women who are taking significant strides, breaking barriers, and leaving indelible footprints in their respective fields. 

Motunrayo Alaka is a prominent figure in Nigeria’s media landscape. She is a communication strategist, media professional, and gender advocate who worked passionately to advance institutional transparency across Nigeria and the wider African continent. Since the assumption of her role at WSCIJ, she has facilitated direct training for over 7,000 reporters and mentored thousands of aspiring media professionals. 

According to the NAWOJ’s statement, the ​prestigious recognition celebrates Motunrayo’s decades of exceptional leadership, fierce advocacy for press freedom, and unwavering commitment to elevating women in media and journalism across Nigeria and Africa. The organisation also celebrates her leadership strategy at WSCIJ, especially the Report Women! project, which has empowered many female journalists with skills and support to break the glass ceiling and step into leadership positions.

​”Motunrayo Alaka is not just a leader; she is a builder of people and a beacon of integrity in the media landscape. Her dedication to fostering gender equity and mentoring the next generation of investigative journalists makes her a thoroughly deserving recipient of this honour for the month of June,” Jumoke Falayi Johnson, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, said. 

Following this accolade, the trailblazer leader joins past recipients of the honour like Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi, Dr Abimbola Abosede Oyetunde, Mrs Sola Salako-Ajulo, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy Ndisika and the late Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, recognised posthumously on June 4.
