Nigerian content creator Praise John has revealed how four agberos harassed her and two friends at a Lagos bus stop after they exchanged dollars nearby, demanding a share of their money and blocking every vehicle they tried to board until a bystander intervened.
Agberos are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ touts, who control bus stops and motor parks across Lagos and extract levies from commercial drivers, roadside traders, and increasingly members of the public. Their operations are widely understood to enjoy political protection.
Praise John shared that her experience with Agberos in Lagos occurred on August 4, 2026, days after agberos disrupted the high-profile wedding of TikTok creators Peller and Jarvis, demanding settlements from guests, snatching phones, and nearly lynching the occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLE whose driver refused to pay them.
“What Lagos agberos did to my friends and me just because we exchanged dollars in front of them is crazy. They already collected money from the aboki man, yet they still harassed us and every vehicle we tried to enter. Nobody wanted to carry us because they were being threatened.”
She stated that the men demanded she and her two companions, three young women, hand over part of their money. “They stood there, four grown dirty old men who refused to work, acting entitled,” she stated.
She added that when she refused to comply, the situation escalated until a bystander intervened, speaking to the agberos in Yoruba and getting the women out safely. “They almost started hitting us,” she shared.
The incidents have sparked a wave of reactions online, with Nigerians sharing their own experiences with agberos. X user @Bae__Ruth posted on August 4 that an agbero seized the key to the keke she was riding, apparently expecting the driver to follow and beg for it back. The driver, unbothered, produced a spare key, started the engine, and drove off.
